I have an older Gateway laptop with Windows 95 on it. I still have a bunch of personal stuff on it, but don’t use it anymore.
Is there a way to reset the computer or delete everything on it? I don’t have any of the original install disks or anything.
Or should I just take out the hard drive and destroy it, or is there a better way to just delete everything on the computer?
I’m going to take it to a computer recycling place this weekend. Suggestions on what to do before I take it there would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Unless you expect the FBI to be probing it you can just take the install disk and reinstall the system. The odds of someone later trying to extract information is almost nil.
Without the install disk look into the format command. Go to the DOS prompt and type help format.
Note that a file shredder will clear all free space but will leave any files you forget to delete ahead of time.

If u want to delete a file from ur PC permanently u have to ‘Shred’ it. It means that ‘ overwriting the file with unwanted info, so that absolutely NO ONE can recover it again’. It can be done safely by some softwares. Here is one free tool for that.

File Shredder is free desktop application for shredding (destroying) unwanted files beyond recovery
Do a Google search for DBAN. It is a small utility that can be either put onto a floppy disk or burned onto a CD. All you do is put it into your computer while its booting and it will boot DBAN. It will give you several options for how you want to erase your hard drive; the default is sufficient. This program will securely erase every single bit and byte on your hard drive. It will take a long time to complete, however. Depending on the size of the hard drive, it can take from three hours to three days.
well if you want to be REAL safe, take the HDD out but its sufficient to just reformat it. if you don’t have the OS then make a bootdisk with format.com on it and reformat it
go into dos and type format c: and let it do its thing… then mail it to me… Anthony Durham P.O. box 421. St. Joseph TN. 38481
age old question, kill a perfectly good hard drive in the interest of security, or be earth friendly and hand the machine over to a new owner after your best effort to wipe all personal data without breaking the operating system.
you’ll have to decide based on the sensitivity of any data that is or was stored on there.
if you can not tolerate the risk of anyone finding data that used to be on that machine, your only option is to physically destroy the hard drive.
but if you can tolerate some risk, as in wiping the hard drive to a point where it would be prohibitively costly to attempt data recovery, you can use a program like dban to overwrite the entire drive. this would of course remove the operating system. i understand you no longer have the install disks (have you checked to see if they are on the hard drive currently?), but you could download and install a free operating system such as ubuntu (or, in the case of a machine old enough to be running win95, you could try xubuntu), or you could leave the drive bare and let the next owner worry about it.
Delete the partition, every thing becomes history.
I would just take the hard drive completely out of the computer, that’s the best sure bet. Turn the laptop over, there will be a panel usually secured by 2 screws, open it up and take it out.
